Easy Steps To Get Rid Of Junk Mail & Unwanted Phone Calls

October 2006

Unfortunately everyone wants to try and sell us something these days. The amount of junk mail is increasing every year and perhaps more worrying is the new trend of marketers calling us at our homes, often at night when there’s a better chance of someone answering.

But we can fight back, there are laws governing the firms that solicit us and the good news is that the strategies below are pretty effective. They won’t stop everything but they’ll catch 90% of the problem.

How To Stop Junk Mail

There are actually two types of junk mail, firstly the stuff that’s addressed to you personally and secondly the mail addressed to just ‘The Occupier’.

Stop Junk Mail Addressed To You

  • Register at The Mailing Preference Service www.mpsonline.org.uk
  • This service will remove your name and address from 95% of the junk mailing lists
  • An application takes about 3 months to process
  • The service will not stop mail sent from abroad or from small local firms such as carpet cleaners etc, nor will it stop mail addressed to ‘The Occupier’

Stop Junk Mail Not Addressed To You

  • Register with the Royal Mail’s opt-out service which is free - email : optout@royalmail.co.uk, or write to them at –

Royal Mail Door to Door
Kingsmead House
Oxpens Road
Oxford
OX1 1 RX

  • But this will only stop the junk mail that the Royal Mail is paid to deliver

Stop Unwanted Phone Calls

  • Register your phone number with The Telephone Preference Service www.tpsonline.org.uk – 0845 070 0707
  • This is a free service that bans commercial organisations from calling you at home
  • Stopping mobile phone spam sms messages is not that easy, the best way is to never fill your mobile number out on any forms and don’t enter any games or competitions etc

Summary

We have used both of these services for the last year or so and they’re pretty effective and well worth signing up.
