FREE Microsoft Office Worth £300!

June 2005

Well not exactly but why pay when you can have almost identical and many argue better software for free!

The OpenOffice suite of software is 100% free and has everything you’ll need from a Word Processor to Spreadsheet to Presentation software. We installed it last week on one of our office machines and so far it not only looks better than Word/Excel but is starting to perform better as well, especially with their Excel clone which is called Calc. If you’re tired of Microsoft or need to upgrade from say MS Works or just plain like saving money then you’d be foolish not to give Open Office some serious thought.

Incidentally it seems that many offices are starting to replace paid for software like Windows and MS Office with the free operating system Linux plus programs like Open Office. Even if you're running a small office with say 10 terminals replacing certain programs can save many of thousands of Pounds.

On this point it will also be interesting to note if the gradual migration that has already started of large companies moving over to free open source software will pick up steam. People have long argued that Microsoft makes most of its money due to the monopolistic nature of its Windows operating system. So imagine the impact if just 5% of the FTSE 100 or Fortune 500 companies decide not to buy from Microsoft and go down the free route? Even if Microsoft finds a way to keep demand for its products it will most probably be forced to reduce prices or offer other such benefits which will eat into its high margins and profits.
