How Valuable Is Your Data?
June 2005
If someone stole your computer or your hard drive broke would your life break down? For many people the answer is yes, their data (emails, address book, Word & Excel documents) are simply irreplaceable.
One way to combat this problem is to do regular backups preferably to a blank CD or DVD. This is all very well but a) chances are you’ll forget and b) what happens if there’s a fire and you lose everything?
The answer lies in the excellent and incredibly good value www.datadepositbox.com service. It’s an American company which charges $0.01 a month per Megabyte to automatically backup your data (assuming of course you’re on broadband).
A small piece of software sits on your computer and backs up your data all the time. It takes less than 2 mins to install and is pretty idiot proof. Most people have less than 100MB of important data so the cost would be around $1 a month, or say £6-£7 a year.
Your data is backed up to their secure servers and if you have a problem (perhaps your notebook computer is stolen) all you have to do is sign in to their website and download everything. It’s foolproof and a real lifesaver.
