How To Improve Your Computer Monitor's Sharpness For Free In Less Than 3 Minutes

August 2006

STOP PRESS - Microsoft produces some good software!

Ever so occasionally Microsoft comes up with a free tool that actually helps us when we’re working or playing on our computers. Case in point is the excellent ClearType Tuner PowerToy.

The Problem - The Text On Our Screens Could Be Sharper/Clearer

  • When we first turn on a new computer the standard setting for the screen fonts is “standard”
  • But most people don’t know that if they use the setting “ClearType” all the text looks so much better - in most cases
  • This is especially true when it comes to Flat Screen Monitors (TFT) which many people now use
  • To enable your computer to use the ClearType setting go to this Microsoft link and download & install the free software (2.5MB in size)
  • If you need any help on installing or running the software there's plenty available on the web page where you download the utility
  • Once the software is installed it takes about a minute to tweak the settings to your liking via a wizard and you should see a marked improvement in how text is displayed on your monitor
  • However, around 10% of computer users don't like the changes - this is of little worry because of the software can revert back to the original settings with a couple of clicks of the mouse

Summary

We advise all our readers to download this really useful piece of software which is simple to use and install. We've just done so on all our office computers and are very happy with the change that have been made.
